Couple Spanish Riders killed in an accident

Two Spanish racers were slaughtered in a chain-response crash on the first lap of a World Superbike race.

The passings happened Sunday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Monterey County sheriff's representative Cmdr. John Thornburg said.

MotoAmerica representative Paul Carruthers said there were 28 riders in the race and a huge number of onlookers in the stands when five contenders crashed on the first lap. Riders were hurled into the earth to the side of the track.

The sheriff's office is not examining the accident at the MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 race, which seemed, by all accounts, to be a mischance, he said.

The track was dry amid the race, Carruthers said.

"In the event that there's ever an issue with the track, we don't hold the race," he said.

Carruthers declined to remark on whether MotoAmerica, which sorts out the race, will examine.

MotoAmerica recognized the riders slaughtered as 35-year-old Bernat Martinez, 35, of Alberic, Valencia, Spain; and Daniel Rivas Fernandez, 27, of Moana Galicia, Spain. Both were taken to doctor's facilities, where they kicked the bucket.

Track representative David Hart said four different riders were dealt with at the track and discharged. Their names were not discharged.

It was not instantly clear what prompted the accident, Hart said, including that Laguna Seca will direct an examination.

MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey sent sympathies to the families.

"I truly don't have any words to depict what we all vibe," Rainey said in an announcement. "As a matter of first importance, is the misfortune to the families and friends and family."
